Troop 215 holds Troop Meetings every Tuesday each month from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM at Jack Seel Scout Hut & Centennial Scout Hut, 413 West Whitner Street Anderson, South Carolina 29624,
Additional Patrol Meetings may be held on a schedule determined by the scouts' Patrol Leader.
For meetings that are scheduled on holiday, the Scout Leadership along with the Adult Leaderships will determine whether to hold the meeting or cancel the scheduled meeting, notice will be given within two weeks of the holiday.
The troop calendar is available on the website (Troop Calendar) to help you keep track of Troop Meetings and Patrol Meetings.
Occasionally a meeting will be held at another location for a special event. Scouts and parents will be told about these special meetings as far in advance as practical.
In a well-run Scout Troop, one of the first things a visiting parent is likely to notice is that the adult leaders are generally not directly involved in running a meeting. This approach is very different from the cub scout program.
The members of the Scout Troop elect their Senior Patrol Leader, and that youth member of the troop is responsible for organizing and running the meetings and activities. This is not to say that the Scout is doing very thing along, the Scout has selected a team of other youth leaders to help organize and run the events.
Scouts are grouped into Patrols, which are also led by an elected Patrol Leader. It is at the patrol level that the Scout learn and practice many of their skills.
For the first couple of years, a Scout’s primary focus will be on learning basic outdoor and Scouting skills as they advance on their way to the First Class Rank.
Older Scouts become responsible for teaching the younger scouts and providing mentorship and leadership for them. As older Scouts advance through their Star, Life, and Eagle ranks, their advancement will focus on serving in leadership roles; providing community service; and learning skills, vocations, and hobbies through merit badges.
The primary purpose of the Adult leadership is to maintain the safety of the Scouts and to be Adults required for signing campsite agreements, transportation, and other similar tasks. The Adult leadership will also assist in “checking off” that Scouts have successfully learned skills on their road to advancement.
Scouting is a family affair. No Scout is expected to travel the Trail to Eagle alone. Parents should encourage their youth to work on advancement and take full advantage of the Scouting program. Parents have been invited to Troop meetings, monthly Committee meetings, and especially Courts of Honor held three times a year.
On the other hand, it is preferable that parents not sign off on advancement and merit badges for their youths. Advancements may be signed off by the Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmasters, Patrol Advisors, and designated Senior Scouts. Merit badges must be signed off by the registered merit badge counselor. A parent cannot be the counselor for his/her youth without Troop committee approval.
If a parent has a special skill or training, we encourage her/ him to serve as a Merit Badge Counselor for interested Scouts. There are over 120 different merit badges available. A sign-up form is available on the troop website.
Without the help of all kinds from our parents, Troop 215 would not exist. We hope you will take an active part in encouraging your youth. Your role as “cheerleader” is a big reason for your youth's interest and success. Parents also have a big impact on our Troop Committee, which meets just once a month. The time commitment of a committee member is minimal, but your assistance is invaluable. All parents are welcome on the Troop Committee. You do not need scouting experience, only an interest in helping the troop.
Our troop also needs parents to assist with special events and to drive to activities. Because the Scouts lead the troop, “helping” is usually just “watching” but your presence can make a difference. National B.S.A. rules require at least two adults at every meeting and activity. Some activities require adults with special training and EVENTS MUST BE CANCELLED if sufficient trained leaders are not available.
While we encourage adults to attend camping trips with their scouts, we know that some people prefer to help in other ways. While you will hear often that the troop is ‘boy-led’, it still requires many adults to run a successful troop.
